Thanks for a great time, guys! Always a treat to jam with you. This song is the great Toussaint McCall’s “Nothing Takes The Place Of You”. Toussaint passed last year at the age of 89, and these guys were kind enough to learn it for me.

If you’d like to see us again, I’ll be with them on June 29 at the Blue Star Mothers Car Show in Coshocton, and then we’ll be playing the AUstin’s Forever 10 Benefit Ride at Ike’s Pub in Galloway on July 13. Come out and see us!

This is Karen: community builder.

In partnership with @poetry_cauldron_cbus, @shortnorthartsdistrict, and @onpaperohio, I was asked to write Flash Poetry at the June 1 HOPS on High Gallery Hop. I sat on the High St. sidewalk with a vintage typewriter, and Gallery Hop participants would stop by, tell me what’s on their mind, and I’d write a poem for them: one draft, on the spot, in a few minutes (typos and all).

Karen was drawn in by The Poetry Cauldron’s own Mandar Kathe, whose excited friendliness drew her into conversation as she and friends were going into the restaurant next door. We got into a discussion about how the disconnection of neighbors and people in proximity to each other leads to a dissolution of “community”. How the world seems to be growing increasingly isolated and unhappy, and it leaves most of us wondering how to stop it. We both suspect that the answer lies in “each other”.

If the proof is in the pudding, as they say, the fact that Karen stopped and shared her vulnerabilities with a complete stranger showed me that she truly means what she says. And I was honored to be allowed to connect with her.

Thank you for your openness and your vulnerability, Karen. Stay dedicated to that kind of connection. The world needs more of you.

COMMUNITY IS IN THE ARMS

When we look around the world,
we see no shortage of arms
but a lack of hugs. Just crossed and folded
posture and elbows meant to declare this world
as “mine”.

There are 24 muscles in the human arm.
Soft tissues filled with liquid from the heart
and gentle texture. This is what propels us
and allows us the choice -
move closer or further away.

Choose the warmer option.
The origin of an embrace is in the decision
to use our arms for warmth and support.
And when they close, let them close around others:
muscle to muscle, heart to heart, strength to support.
Let us build from there.
